Had a very fun hunt Saturday 3/28/09 with my buddy Chad. As soon as we got into the blind we could hear gobblers in the roosts all around us. We were very excited. Soon it was day light and we could hear turkeys flying down everywhere. We knew it was going to be a good day.

Chad started in on the calls and within minutes we could see heads and eyes peering through the brush. Once they made the DSD hen it was on. 4 turkeys rushed in like nothing I had seen before. They started fighting over it and jumping up and down on it. We then realized they were all 4 jakes and we were holding out for Toms. A wise choice for what happened next. We see movement out of the corner of the blind and with a closer look we see nothing but beard. This wise bird didnt rush in at first but skirted our set up at about 80 yards curiously watching the jakes having a romper room session. It was then we noticed something about his beard wasnt right. A quick peek through the binos confirmed our suspension. This turkey was not only a big Tom but he had TWO beards!

As the Tom got a better look he could see two jakes mounting the hen decoy at the same time. He wasnt having any of that and just like that came rushing straight in. He took all 4 jakes on like a Bruce Lee movie and I swear I saw him knock two down with one flying leap. The show was fantastic but I quickly remembered why I came. I pull the bow back, put the pin on him and let one fly. It hit him like a ton of bricks and he didnt move more then a foot as he just flopped on the ground and died.

Now this is when the jakes should be making a break for it you would think. Not a chance! They saw the opportunity for some pay back and all 4 jumped on this downed Tom and started tearing him to pieces. Chad and I decided to leave it alone a minute since the Tom was down and we hoped for one more Tom to come in to see what the fuss was about. After a minute or two I feared my Tom wasnt going to make it to the Taxi if I let this beating by the jakes continue and told Chad we needed to get him out of there. He agreed and opened the door to the blind. Not 10 feet behind us and VERY large Tom goes screeching off.

We ran off the jakes and retrieved my trophy. A double bearded Tom with 8" beards (Larry Newbie insists their 8 1/8) 21lbs and big fat spurs. The tail fan completely intact. My first Tom with a bow as well. Its getting mounted.

We went to a different property to get Chad a bird. Chad called in alot of turkeys but they all seemed to hang up at 60 yards wanting the hen (decoy) to come to them. The fact that a few different hens hung out with the decoy and then went to the toms didnt help much.

Chad and Mike went out Sunday to try it again and I sat this one out since the blind only holds two hunters and I already got a turkey. They both scored on the second day and Chads Turkey was over 10 inches on the beard.

A HUGE thanks goes out to Chad for taking us all out and for letting me have that double beard. We couldnt have done it with out him and he has become one heck of a good buddy and not just because of all the kick butt hunts he takes me on...lol.
